The production process recreates the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the Earth, compressing a geological process that normally takes hundreds of millions or even billions of years into a period of only several weeks.
Although these stones are sometimes described as “synthetic diamonds,” they are not artificial substitutes or diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
Lab-grown diamonds consist of pure carbon arranged in the same crystal structure as natural diamonds. They possess a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and display optical properties, thermal conductivity, and durability that are almost indistinguishable from those of natural diamonds.
For this reason, distinguishing a natural diamond from a lab-grown diamond generally requires scientific instruments and specialist gemological laboratories. Visual inspection with the unaided eye is not sufficient.

CVD technology has become increasingly prominent because it can produce high-quality diamonds at declining costs and is well suited to the manufacture of diamonds for premium jewelry.
Advances in both HPHT and CVD technologies have rapidly reduced production costs. As a result, the retail prices of lab-grown diamonds have continued to decline in recent years.
3.3 The changing concept of “value”
Historically, the value of diamonds was built primarily upon the concept of scarcity. Discovering diamond deposits required extensive geological exploration, substantial investment, and complex mining operations. These conditions limited the supply of natural diamonds and contributed to their high market value.
When technology makes it possible to produce diamonds according to demand, however, the concept of scarcity begins to be questioned.

Future materials therefore have the potential to transform not only the appearance of jewelry but also the systems through which it is designed, manufactured, distributed, repaired, and reused.
3.6 Effects on the jewelry industry
The growth of lab-grown diamonds is forcing the jewelry industry to revise its strategies in several areas.
Natural-diamond producers are placing greater emphasis on communicating provenance, rarity, geological origin, and cultural value. Lab-grown diamond producers, by contrast, tend to emphasize innovation, transparency, affordability, and technological achievement.
Many retailers have adapted their presentation strategies by clearly separating natural-diamond and lab-grown-diamond collections. They also provide information intended to help consumers make decisions according to their personal preferences, intended use, and budget.
At the same time, jewelry manufacturers are expanding their bespoke and personalization services in order to create value beyond the materials themselves.
This shift is strategically important. When two products possess similar visual and physical characteristics, differentiation must increasingly be created through other dimensions, such as:
- Design
- Craftsmanship
- Brand narrative
- Customer service
- Personalization
- Certification and disclosure
- The overall purchasing experience
The finished piece of jewelry must therefore communicate more than the technical specifications of the stone it contains.
3.7 Marketing opportunities for Thailand
Thailand possesses a strong advantage as a regional center for jewelry manufacturing and design.
The transformation of the diamond market creates several new opportunities for Thai businesses, including:
- Designing contemporary jewelry with lab-grown diamonds for younger consumers
- Creating collections that combine natural and lab-grown diamonds according to their intended purposes
- Adding value through craftsmanship and design rather than competing solely on material prices
- Developing bespoke jewelry services
- Using digital technologies to communicate information about materials and production processes
Thai manufacturers may also use their established capabilities in gemstone cutting, setting, metalwork, and small-scale production to serve increasingly fragmented consumer markets.
For example, natural diamonds may be positioned within heirloom, ceremonial, or high-luxury collections, while lab-grown diamonds may be used in contemporary fashion, personalized jewelry, or design-led pieces intended for everyday wear.
Collections may also combine different categories of stones according to symbolic or functional purposes. A central natural diamond, for instance, may be accompanied by lab-grown accent stones, allowing designers to balance narrative value, visual impact, and price accessibility.
In the long term, the ability to create distinctive designs and meaningful customer experiences will become a more powerful source of differentiation than reliance on any single category of material.
3.8 Strategic analysis
The emergence of lab-grown diamonds demonstrates that technology can significantly reduce the limitations created by material scarcity. It cannot, however, entirely replace the emotional value, narratives, and meanings that consumers associate with a product.
For marketers, the principal challenge is therefore not to determine which type of diamond is inherently “better.” The more important task is to understand what each consumer segment values.
Some consumers prioritize history and rarity. Others prioritize innovation and value for money. Another group places greater importance on design, personalization, and emotional meaning.
The future success of jewelry brands will therefore depend on their ability to present forms of value that correspond with the motivations of each consumer group, rather than competing solely through the physical properties of materials.
A brand selling natural diamonds may emphasize geological time, provenance, rarity, inheritance, and enduring symbolism. A brand offering lab-grown diamonds may emphasize technology, creative freedom, accessibility, and contemporary values. A design-focused brand may use either material while concentrating on craftsmanship, personalization, and storytelling.
The strategic question is no longer simply: “Which diamond should the brand sell?” It is increasingly: “What meaning does the brand wish to create, and for which consumer?”

Lab-grown diamonds do not represent the end of natural diamonds. Rather, they mark the beginning of a new era in which consumers have more choices and the definition of “value” has become more diverse.
